Bread Uppittu


Bread uppittu or upma is my go-to dish when I have excess bread sitting in my refrigerator. Simple and quick snack or perfect for weekday breakfast. They are great for lunch boxes too. I make them using white or multi grain bread – tastes great with both. (Here I have used white bread)

Try this easy, tasty bread dish which is read in less than 15 minutes and youΒ  won’t miss your toast or sandwich πŸ™‚

 

Ingredients:

Bread slices – 6-7
Peanuts – ΒΌ cup
Onion – 1 medium, chopped
Oil – 3 tbsp
Mustard seeds – Β½ tsp
Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
Split black gram or urad dal – 1 tsp
Asafoetida or hing – a pinch
Curry leaves – 5-6
Green chilli – 1-2, chopped or as per taste
Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
Salt to taste
Juice of Β½ a lemon
Coriander leaves for garnish

Method:

  1. Cut the bread slices into bite sized pieces and set aside
  2. Heat oil in a fry pan or kadhai and add mustard seeds
  3. Once it splutters, add cumin seeds, urad dal, hing, curry leaves, green chilli and saute for a few seconds
  4. Add turmeric powder, peanuts and fry on medium flame until peanuts are crunchy (2-3 minutes)
  5. Add onions and saute briefly until the onion is translucent
  6. Add salt and mix well
  7. Add the bread pieces and mix well. Simmer for 1-2 minutes
  8. Turn off the flame and add lemon juice
  9. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve
