Sabbasige Soppu Palya (Dill leaf stir fry)

Sabbasige soppu or Dill is widely known for it’s health benefits. These highly nutritious greens is rich in essential vitamins and minerals and has been used for medicinal purpose for thousands of years. Dill is used in Karnataka cuisine to make stir fry, dals, fritters, and much more. This simple stir fry served with rotis or rice is an easy weekday meal.

dill stir fry



Dill leaf – 1 cup
Pigeon pea lentil (toor dal) – ½ cup
Oil – 2 tsp
Dry red chill – 1-2
Garlic – 3-4 cloves, sliced
Asafoetida – a pinch
Salt to taste
Grated coconut – ¼ cup


  1. Wash the pigeon pea lentil and boil with sufficient water until it is completely cooked but not mushy
  2. Wash the dill leaves and chop them roughly
  3. Heat oil in a fry pan or kadhai. Add garlic and dry red chilli. Saute until the garlic turns golden brown
  4. Add asafoetida and saute for a few seconds
  5. Add the dill leaves, salt and mix well. Add some water and simmer for a few minutes until the dill is cooked
  6. Add the boiled pigeon pea lentil and mix well. Simmer for another 5-10 minutes
  7. Add grated coconut and mix well. Turn off the heat
  8. Serve hot with rice or roti
