Garlic Bread

Garlic bread sticks are easy to make bread sticks topped with garlic, aromatic herbs, and loads of cheese. They are great appetisers, but pair it with tomato soup for a perfect dinner option. There are several ways of making it. For example, take store bought bread, smear the garlic butter mixture over it, topping it with cheese, and grilling it. But making the bread itself from scratch is easier than you think and there is nothing that can match freshly baked bread.

I add fresh basil to the garlic butter mixture and it adds a beautiful aroma to it. You may replace it with the herb or your choice including coriander leaves. Also the amount of cheese you add can be altered as per your liking. I make it cheesier mainly because my daughter loves the cheese strings when I cut the bread. You may even add some chilli flakes to the garlic butter, but I skip it to suit the taste of my little one. With so many options to tweak the taste, this one is definitely not to be missed. Do try it and let me know your feedback.

Ingredients:

Plain flour – 2 cups
Dry yeast – 1 tsp
Milk – ¼ cup
Water – ½ cup (approximately)
Salt – 1 tbsp
Sugar – 1 tbsp
Oil – 2 tbsp
Salted butter – 3-4 tbsp, at room temprature
Garlic cloves – 3-4, grated
Mixed Italian herbs – 1 tbsp
Fresh basil leaves – a few, roughly chopped (optional)
Mozzarella cheese – ½ cup (you may increase or decrease it as per your liking)

Method:

  1. Heat the milk until it is warm. Add yeast and sugar and mix well. Let it sit for 5-6 minutes until it becomes frothy
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour and salt together. Add oil and milk-yeast mixture
  3. Gradually add water and combine the dough
  4. Transfer onto a flat surface and knead it until the dough is soft, smooth and pilable (8-10 minutes)
  5. Cover the bowl with a cling wrap and let it rest in a warm place for about 1 hour. The dough will be almost double in size after resting
  6. In a small bowl, combine butter, garlic, mixed herbs, and basil leaves
  7. Preheat oven at 180 degree Celsius
  8. Once the dough is rested, punch it to remove the trapped air. Knead again for 2-3 minutes
  9. Spread the dough onto a baking tray in oval shape
  10. Spread the butter mixture all over it. Top it with mozzarella cheese
  11. Bake in a preheated oven for 10-12 minutes
  12. Turn the oven to grill mode and bake it for another 2-3 minutes until the top becomes golden and starts to bubble. Keep a close watch at this stage as it tends to burn quickly
  13. Take it out of oven once done, slice and serve
