Churmuri Chiwda (Puffed Rice with spices)


 

Churmuri or puffed rice – perfect ingredient to make a healthy snack. There are a number of ways puffed rice can be used to make a snack. This is a simple recipe where it is tossed with tempered spice mixture. Store it in an air tight container and it will stay fresh for 1-2 weeks. Crunchy, healthy tea time snack or just munch on it when you feel like!

Ingredients:

Puffed Rice – 5 cups
Oil – 2-3 tbsp
Asafoetida – 1 tsp
Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
Red chilli powder – ½ tsp
Dry red chilli – 2-3
Curry leaves – 10-12
Roasted Bengal Gram dal – ¼ cup
Dry coconut – ¼ cup, thinly sliced
Salt to taste
Raw Peanuts – ½ cup

Method:

  1. Heat oil in a large fry pan or skillet. Fry the peanuts until they are crunchy
  2. Add the dry red chilli, coconut slices and roasted bengal gram dal and fry for a few more minutes
  3. Add asafoetida, curry leaves, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, salt and saute for 1-2 minutes
  4. Add the puffed rice and mix well
  5. Once cooled store in an air tight container

Notes:

  • Make sure the churmuri chiwda is completely cooled before storing, else it can lose it’s crunch
  • Adjust the chilli based on your preference
