Gasagase Payasa


Gasagase payasa or poppy seeds kheer in a traditional sweet dish from Karnataka. This simple dish is made with just 3 main ingredients – poppy seeds, coconut, and jaggery. Gasagase payasa is usually served as a drink rather than a thick kheer, but it tastes great either way.

To make this dish, I first soak the poppy seeds and cashew in some water. I then grind into a smooth paste along with coconut. I mix jaggery and simmer for a few minutes. That’s it! A very simple, yet very tasty dish.

Vegan, Gluten free, refined sugar free, and absolutely simple, this dish is a winner. It is said that gasagase payasa has great soothing effect and is very good for relaxing the mind and body. Be rest assured, you will have a nice sleep after drinking this 🙂

 

Ingredients:

Gasagase or poppy seeds – 4 tbsp
Fresh coconut – 1 cup, grated
Cashew – 10-12
Jaggery – ¾ cup
Cardamom – 2-3

Method:

  1. Soak poppy seeds and cashew in some water for 1 hour
  2. In a mixer, grind it along with coconut, cardamom seeds and some water into a very fine paste
  3. Transfer into a sauce pan and add jaggery
  4. Bring it to a boil. Simmer for few minutes until the jaggery melts, stiring constantly. Add water to adjust consistency
  5. Turn off the heat
  6. Serve either warm or cold

Notes:

  • You may adjust the jaggery depending on your preference
  • You may use milk instead of water to adjust the consistency of the payasa
  • Gasagase payasa is traditionally served as a drink. But you may add less water and serve it like thick kheer
