Sihi Huggi (Sweet Pongal)

I have earlier shared the recipe of huggi or khara pongal. This is the sweet version of it and an integral part of Makar sankranti celebrations in Karnataka. This traditional sweet dish is made with rice and mung dal and is refined sugar free. Make this along with khara huggi for an amazing meal.

Ingredients:

Rice – ½ cup
Split green gram or moong dal – ½ cup
Jaggery – 1/3 cup, grated
Ghee – ¼ cup
Dry coconut – ¼ cup, grated or ¼ cup desiccated coconut
Cashew – a handful
Raisins – a handful
Cardamom powder – ½ tsp

Method:

  1. Dry roast the moong dal until aromatic (a few minutes)
  2. Mix with rice and wash thoroughly. Cook rice and dal mixture with 2 cups of water in a rice cooker or pressure cooker
  3. Heat ghee in a kadhai or fry pan. Add cashew and fry until light golden
  4. Add raisins and fry for a few seconds. Add dry coconut and mix well
  5. Add the dal-rice mix, jaggery, 1 cup water and combine well
  6. Simmer for a few minutes until the jaggery completely melts and excess moisture evaporates
  7. Add cardamom powder and mix well
  8. Serve hot with huggi
