Turmeric - history, and benefits
Turmeric is used in Indian cooking for ages. The use of turmeric dates back to 4000 years. It is not only used as a spice, it is also known to be sacred and is used in religious ceremonies and weddings. Traditionally, turmeric roots were used in cooking, but modern cooking incorporates turmeric powder which is easier to handle and use.
Turmeric derives its medicinal properties from curcumin which has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In fact, curcumin is what loads turmeric with numerous health benefits. Turmeric helps fight cancer and depression. It is also known to fight the common cold and viral infections. Curcumin also helps with type 2 diabetes and helps in easing the symptoms of osteoarthritis.

Ingredients and variations

Milk: I use whole milk to make golden milk. If you prefer making a vegan version, you may replace it with almond milk. However, take care not to boil the almond milk like regular milk.
Turmeric powder: Traditionally, turmeric root is used to make golden milk. However, I am using turmeric powder. If you use turmeric roots, let them steep in the milk for at least 5 minutes.
Black pepper: I use crushed black pepper here.
Honey: Golden milk is sweetened with honey. For a vegan version, replace honey with jaggery or raw sugar.
All you need to do is simmer milk, turmeric, and pepper for a few minutes, mix honey and serve. If you prefer dairy-free milk, you can replace milk with almond milk. But make sure you don't boil almond milk. Just heat it in a saucepan until it is very hot but not boiling, add turmeric and let it steep. Then mix in honey and serve. Homemade almond milk works best for this.

The color is superb! Thanks for suggesting a vegan option, I used flax milk instead of almond and some agave syrup to sweeten.

I feel like I'm reading about the health benefits of turmeric/curcumin all the time. This recipe is easy, fast and I have all the ingredients so I just made it. I used vanilla flavored almond milk which I warmed up in the microwave and yes please to the honey. I was a little wary of the black pepper so only added the tiniest dash. This is good! I can totally see making this a habit! I need to stock up on turmeric now. 🙂

I've been experimenting with different Turmeric milk recipes and this one is definitely the best one. Straining the mil through a sieve made all the different to the texture. We loved it. Thank you.
