Modak is considered the favourite food of Lord Ganesha. Modak has an outer covering of rice flour with a filling of coconut and jaggery


For the filling 2 cups coconut 1 cup jaggery 1 tablespoon ghee ½ teaspoon cardamom powder For the outer cover 2 cups rice flour 2 cups water ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ghee

Heat ghee in a kadhai. Add coconut and jaggery. Mix well

Keep stirring until the mixture thickens and comes together. Add cardamom powder

Sieve the rice flour

Add rice flour, salt, ghee to boiling water

Mix well till all the water is absorbed

Keep the mixture covered for 5 minutes

Knead the dough for 5-6 minutes

Add some dough inside the modak mould and press to make a hole

Add 1 tablespoon coconut filling

Add some dough on top of the filling and press it gently to seal completely

Unmould the modak

Place modaks on a steamer plate

Steam them for 10 minutes or until they are shiny and glossy

FAQ Why is my modak dough cracking while shaping? Modak dough will crack during shaping if the dough is too dry. If this happens, add 1 tbsp warm water at a time and knead the dough again. Why is my modak dough sticky? This happens if the amount of rice flour is less than water. Always use 1:1 rice flour and water. Measure them using the same measuring cup.
