Gasagase payasa

Gasagase payasa or poppy seeds kheer in a traditional sweet dish from Karnataka. This simple dish is made with just 3 main ingredients – poppy seeds, coconut, and jaggery.

Ingredients
  

  • 4 tbsp poppy seeds (gasagase)
  • 1 cup coconut fresh, grated
  • 10-12 cashew
  • ¾ cup jaggery
  • 2-3 cardamom

Instructions
 

  • Soak poppy seeds and cashew in some water for 1 hour
  • In a mixer, grind it along with coconut, cardamom seeds and some water into a very fine paste
  • Transfer into a sauce pan and add jaggery
  • Bring it to a boil. Simmer for few minutes until the jaggery melts, stiring constantly. Add water to adjust consistency
  • Turn off the heat
  • Serve either warm or cold

Notes

  • You may adjust the jaggery depending on your preference
  • You may use milk instead of water to adjust the consistency of the payasa
  • Gasagase payasa is traditionally served as a drink. But you may add less water and serve it like thick kheer
