Mavinakayi Chitranna | Raw Mango Rice





  • 2 cups raw mango cut into cubes or grated
  • cup Basmati rice
  • ½ cup coconut grated
  • ½ teaspoon jaggery
  • 2 tablespoon oil
  • ¼ cup peanuts
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 8-10 curry leaves
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon split black gram (urad dal)
  • 1 teaspoon split Bengal gram (chana dal)
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • A few coriander leaves for garnish


  • ½ teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
  • 5-6 dry red chilli or as per taste
  • 6-7 curry leaves


  • Wash and soak the rice for 30 minutes
  • Cook it until it is just done but not soft or mushy. Spread on a plate and let it cool completely
  • Dry roast the ingredients for the spice powder for a few minutes until aromatic. Let it cool
  • Grind it into a fine powder
  • To this powder, add raw mango, coconut, and jaggery. Grind into a smooth paste using very little water
  • Heat oil in a frying pan or kadhai. Add peanuts and fry until they are crunchy. Set aside
  • In the same oil, add mustard seeds and let it splutter
  • Add cumin seeds, curry leaves, urad dal, chana dal and saute for a few seconds
  • Add the ground paste, turmeric powder, and salt. Mix well and let it simmer until the masala is completely cooked and the gojju thickens
  • Add the fried peanuts and mix well
  • Add the cooked rice. Mix gently taking care not to break the rice
  • Add coriander leaves and mix
  • Serve hot
